I received a copy of Holmes Basic for Christmas, and it's in shockingly good shape.  I almost don't want to use it, but … I will.  Anyway, I can't tell what edition it is!  I checked the Acaeum, but no joy.  The product number is F116-R, but there's no reference to Hobbits in it on page 11.  This seems to rule out True First, First, and Second printings.  It also seems to be a UK edition, as it's got prices on the back in pounds and pence, and promotes White Dwarf on the back.

The inside doesn't say "second print" but "2nd edition, November 1978," and shows the wizard logo and the GW fairy logo.

Is this edition weird and of interest, or just not catalogued on the Acaeum?

Found a quote by Gary about the UK version of the Basic rulebook. From a 2002 interview with an Italian D&D player:

Q: Games Workshop printed in 1978 (there is a photo in "White Dwarf" #5 of some guests of Games Day III having in their hands brand new copies) an entirely original D&D Basic rulebook, using the original US text but with entirely new art and book design. It's one of the rarest D&D titles in existence, long thought a myth by American collectors... Did you ever see it? What was your opinion at the time?

A: That's going back a ways! Yes, I saw the work, and I approved. Ian and Steve convinced me that their audience didn't like the illustrations used in American versions of the game, so I gave them the okay to produce their own. I had a copy of the Basic Set rules, but it was lost when Lorraine Williams took over TSR, locked me out of my office, and seized and never returned most of the games and books I had collected and stored therein.

I was just reviewing "Gygax on Holmes", and found these quotes from Gygax I'd forgotten:

I was just reviewing "Gygax on Holmes", and found these quotes from Gygax I'd forgotten:

"As it happened, I reviewed Eric/s ms. and put in the material I was creating for the new AD&D system"

"I was in charge of the ms. when it was turned over. That is how it came to have new material quite similar to the AD&D game--I was writing the PHB at the time, and I wanted D&D to have some of the new features of the AD&D game"

From these it sounds like Gygax himself was the secondary editor at TSR rather than someone else like Mike Carr or Tim Kask (From Tim's posts on DF I get the impression he was too involved with Dragon magazine at the time to be working on the Basic Set).

Well, here's an interesting aside from Tim Kask while discussing OD&D and the advent of Basic (on an old Dragonsfoot thread here: http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=23223&sid=1a8cfd5dbad7defd204b4be7dd828a60&start=1020 ):

"From D&D to AD&D; There and back again

As I stated earlier, all seven of the little booklets must be considered what is now called OD&D. By this time it had grown fairly complex and was beyond the ken of some of the younger players we hoped to attract.

Gary and I, and probably Gary and others, had often discussed how to broaden our market. I had told Gary all of the Deathless Bob stories, and how he had other young teen friends that would have liked to come play with us "college guys". The problem with the younger set seemed to be that while there was no lack of willing potential new players, there was an absolute dearth of young DM wannabes. And that was certainly understandable; today good players still vastly outnumber good DMs.

At some point, Gary and Brian began talking to Holmes. How they hooked up with him I have no idea. All I knew was that I certainly didn’t think very highly of him for several reasons once I met him."

That last comment really makes me curious just what it was about Holmes that rubbed Tim Kask wrong..

D&D Alumni Archive: OD&D Retrospective

Today's 'D&D Alumni Archive' column on Wizards.com is an OD&D retrospective by Shannon Appelcline, who has been writing the product histories for dndclassics.com. He places Holmes Basic as the last of the OD&D products.

Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (The (Not-So) Secret Origin of D&D)

The first copies of the boxed three-book OD&D set rolled off the presses in January 1974-and the re-release hits the store shelves this week. In today's D&D Alumni, we look back at the "original" edition of Dungeons & Dragons, including its first booklets and supplements.

Dwarven Forge KS Dungeon Tiles

My son and I unpacked my new Dwarven Forge Kickstarter Tiles set last night and he had fun setting up a dungeon. I placed the figures: the white wizards are Reaper Bones, the blue party are early 90s TSR. I am impressed at the quality of the tiles: sturdy with lots of detail and they look great even without painting. This past Friday at my regular game night the DM used his set for a combat but I forgot to take pics.

D&D article in 1980 issue of Dynamite

Tony Rowe wrote:

Holmes Basic rulebook spotted in the hands of a girl (!) in this article about D&D from a 1980 issue of Dynamite Magazine.

"The new game did not catch on - mainly because no one could understand the rules. But in 1976, a new version of D&D appeared, and it really took off." That publishing date should read 1977, of course.

Thanks to Michael Thomas I was able to look at a copy of issue #4 (1978) of the Runequest zine, Wyrm's Footnotes. On page 4, I found a list of the first fifty people who purchased the game Nomad Gods, and it includes a one "J E Holmes, Los Angeles CA". I just checked and Holmes mentions Wyrm's Footnotes and Nomad Gods in the section on Runequest in his FRPG book.

Field Guide to the Little People

I found this book recently at a library sale. It's an encyclopedia of "little people" with a European focus, the author is German. The blog linked below has more pics from the interior. It was first published in 1977, same year as Holmes Basic and the Monster Manual. And it's still in print, though with different illustrations.

Found this going through the game parts and pieces in our Boneyard. [No, it's not for sale.] The very first print of the Dungeons and Dragons blue rulebook has:
* TSR's lizardman logo
* 1977 copyright
* soon-to-be-dropped F116-R product code (all subsequent printings went to a 2001 code)
* "T.M. Reg. app. for" (still getting the Dungeons and Dragons trademark registered).
* Page 11 has references to Hobbits that were dropped from later printings.

Downloaded Mazes & Perils (thanks for the link folks!) and gave a it quick skim. Interesting to see what was included and what was not rules-wise. You've got your standard abilities and four player character races. Exceptional strength similar to AD&D was in there, which surprised me a bit. Race as class is out, with AD&D style class options and level limits. Initiative is Holmes style, by DEX. Options are included for variable HD types for classes, variable weapon damage (standard is everything does 1d6), and rolling dice for initiative rather than using DEX. Interesting approach, will have to give it a closer read when I get a chance.

Question for the collective.

Question for the collective.. There have been OSR adaptations of nearly every version of D&D ever released (Labyrinth Lord for B/X, OSRIC for AD&D, etc.) but I have yet to see an OSR adaptation of Holmes. Have I just not run across it, or does one not exist? If not, any theories why? (beyond the obvious that Holmes only covered lvls 1-3, and thus saw considerably less long term play)

Last week I had some down time and read through my copies of Holmes Basic, Moldvay Basic and the old Monster & Treasure Assortment (the final level 1-9 compilation version). Given its roughly contemporary publication date to Holmes (the original 3 booklets in 1977-78, the compilation in 1980), I figured the M&TA could make a good resource for a Holmes DM looking to quickly stock a dungeon a la B1.
One interesting thing I noticed about the 1980 M&TA compilation - it mixes monsters from several versions of the game. There are listings for crab spiders and caecilia (which I only recall being present in B/X), but also demons on the lower levels (only present in OD&D/Eldritch Wizardry and AD&D1e). I guess you could say that compilation had little something for everybody , or at least every edition available at that time.

Last night I finished the first draft of Part 7: Treasures.

Last night I finished the first draft of Part 7: Treasures. That means I am now on the last chapter, Part 8: Campaigns. This chapter will be about designing adventures in the Underworld, the Wilderness, and the Realm. There will also be a slice of advice for referees on campaigns, house rules, character advancement, and the like. This, of all chapters, will be interesting to write because it relies very little on the d20 SRD or the original rules. It will, however, draw on Holmes's ideas on creating a fantasy life in a game without end.

Okay, before I get too excited, I know that the first draft is just the start of a lot of work - there is the first edit, the proofreading, the re-writing, the continuity checking - and that's even before we get to layout. But at least the end is in sight, and once layout is done I will be able to get quotations for artwork and see about setting up that Indiegogo for funding the same.

Which brings to mind a question, do any of you have any pointers with regard to making that all-important Indiegogo video? I must admit to complete ignorance on that front.

A Biblical "Skull Mountain":

"Golgotha is referred to in early writings as a hill resembling a skullcap located very near to a gate into Jerusalem. A spot there is called Golgotha, - of old the fathers' earlier tongue thus called its name, "The skull-pan of a head". Since the 6th century it has been referred to as the location of a mountain, and as a small hill since 333"  #skullmountain

Cut-Out Equipiment List

A Holmes Basic Set was found on Ebay recently with a small cut-out of the Equipment List with "Armor Class __ " written along the bottom edge. As I wrote in a follow up post, it's not a cut up reference sheet, since that has the two equipment lists side-by-side. It's either a cut-out of someone's else rulebook or a photocopy. I could see giving it to the players for reference, but the "Armor Class _" makes me wonder if it was intended to be a primitive character sheet. You could just mark/circle the items your character bought.

Wayne pointed out today that B1 has at least one roll-under 3d6 stat check. I took a look at the original Holmes version (1978), and found it in the Room of Pools. It's a CON check vs the effects of wine, with a failed roll resulting in intoxication for a number of hours equal to the difference between the result and the con score.

Holmes uses 3d6 checks in the pseudo-D&D RPG he presents in his 1981 book, but this is the first I've seen in any actual Holmes Basic product, and the earliest I've seen in a D&D product so far. I wouldn't be surprised if it shows up somewhere earlier though, such as Alarums & Excursions.

An amazing find posted on the Acaeum.

An amazing find posted on the Acaeum. A Dragontooth Saurian mini modified by David Sutherland himself to resemble the Lizard Rider from page 3 of the Basic Rulebook. There are several direct similarities not found in the original mini: the sheath with javelins and skull, the crested helmet, the left hand holding a battle axe. The main difference is the large horn on the head. Several other versions customized with these horns can be see in the original thread: #dcsIII

Thread discussing OD&D campaign worlds from the 70s by originators and early adopters. I added Holmes' personal campaign to the list:

"Another early one is the personal campaign of J. Eric Holmes from ~1975-1977, OD&D using the Warlock variant rules, before he had contact with TSR. Mostly unpublished, but we see glimpses in the Boinger and Zereth stories. The later stories in Dragon Magazine and Maze of Peril are distorted by time, but the Alarums & Excursions stories ('76-'77) are basically session journals that give a small window into the campaign at the time. Lots of stuff grabbed from the literature and the real world, coexisting side-by-side - witch doctors, samurai, vikings, Dune-like sandworms, Cthulhoid horrors etc"

This works well for me since I sold my Mentzer books years ago but now am glad to add them back to the collection for reference.

I did a side-by-side analysis of Holmes and Moldvay. Holmes should be every magic-user's preferred version of classic D&D.

There may be some fans of Lawrence Watt-Evans here - he is best known for the Ethshar series that began in the 80s with The Misenchanted Sword and is still ongoing. This is his first Kickstarter, to publish a science fantasy novel he has already written. Ends in 5 hours with $7 to go for the top stretch goal ($12 K).

Cover and interior artwork for the novel will be by Bradley W. Schenck, formerly known as Morno, and the artist who illustrated the very first module for Dungeons & Dragons, the Palace of the Vampire Queen. He runs www.webomator.com these days.

Bob Jester (Robert Weber), one of our newest members here, wrote today on Dragonsfoot:

"one of my favorite WWII submarine warfare novels "A Tale of Two Subs" by Jonathan J. McCullough; one of the key figures in this account is of Jasper Holmes, J. Eric Holmes' father, and J. Eric himself gave interviews to J. McCullough in the course of the writing of this book. I would not have known that this was the same "Eric Holmes" that went on to become a successful neurosurgeon and author."

Cost is one of the few statistics actually provided for weapons in the LBBs.

Cost is one of the few statistics actually provided for weapons in the LBBs. I had an idea today for using cost to differentiate weapons when they all do d6 damage:

On an attack roll of 1 (natural), a weapon must make a saving throw to avoid being broken. The score for the save is 16, which is extrapolated from the saving throw tables in Monsters & Treasures, where a +1 weapon saves with a 14, +2 with a 12, etc. Each weapon can add its initial cost per Men & Magic as a bonus to the save. So a club (not listed with a price) would get no bonus, a spear (1 gp) would get a +1, a battle axe a +7, a sword +10, etc. This would give an incentive to buy more expensive weapons if possible because they would less likely to break, and also to have back-up weapons. I like the idea of weapons breaking and needing to be replaced after a while, so this would simulate the wear on weapons - the more times used, the more chance for eventual breakage.

Mentzer DM Guide Map Key

The first page of the sample file for Mentzer DM book is this cool map KEY. The sample file is downloadable, so this is something to possibly grab even if you don't want to buy the pdf.

Mentzer Basic is now available on dndclassics.com.

Mentzer Basic is now available on dndclassics.com. Two pdfs, one for Players book and one for DM's. If you buy either one, there's also a coupon for 50% off a B-series adventure. I'd imagine the rest of BECMI will follow in the coming weeks. So we've got the revisions (Moldvay and Mentzer) but are still waiting for the original Basic!

An rpg.net thread that begins, "Most influential gaming book ever published; one volume only; one vote only. I personally think there are only two credible candidates: Holmes Basic D&D (the obvious choice, based on units sold and 'gateway drug' status for a generation) and the 1st Edition AD&D Monster Manual, which is my pick for the top dog..."

Rules Cyclopedia pdf up on dndclassics as of yesterday. Unfortunately, this doesn't bode well for a reprint.

The product history mentions Holmes Basic twice.

"The Rules Cyclopedia was the result - and it also offered somewhere for the Black Box players to go when they finished with fifth level. Ironically, this was reportedly the exact same setup that Gygax had planned for the J. Eric Holmes Basic Set and also for AD&D, way back in 1977."

Daztur on The RPG site writes:
"Since last year I've run 1 hour-ish D&D (roughly Holmes Basic) mini-sessions with eight different classes of Korean 5-6 graders. They're great lab rats for testing rules and GMing styles since they have no idea what tabletop role playing is and are very enthusiastic (beats doing grammar lessons)."

In case anyone doesn't have it, Holmes's Sample Dungeon from the Basic Rulebook is still available for free from the Wizards of the Coast website. It's a five page pdf, poorly scanned but readable. It was first made available in 2008 as part of a retrospective of D&D Basic Sets by Bart Carroll. I've added it to the "About this Community" links.
