I switched my #ntrpgcon game - which had no sign-ups yet - to Saturday evening at 7 PM so I could play in Chris Holmes' just scheduled D&D in Pellucidar game in the afternoon.

The link to my game is the same: https://tabletop.events/conventions/ntrpgcon-2018/schedule/393 (I now have one two sign-up(s), so two one pre-purchase, 3 general admission tix left)

Chris' game is here : https://tabletop.events/conventions/ntrpgcon-2018/schedule/401 (2 sign-ups inc myself; 2 pre-purchase tix left, 4 general admission).

(NT allows early registration for half of the seats in each game, for $5 each. The remaining seats are available in general registration on April 15th - actually April 14th right at midnight CST).

Picture from Dragon #20

This picture is from Dragon #20. This is the low quality image I grabbed from the pdf from the internetz (annarchive.com), original scan is probably from the Dragon Magazine Archive. Is there anyone with hard copy of the original issue who can make a better scan of this?

Update: Better scan is now at the J. Eric Holmes Gallery.

Added three more pictures to the Holmes picture gallery.

Added three more pictures to the Holmes picture gallery. New pics are the one from the back flap of Tales of Peril; one from a 1993 ERB convention where he was guest of honor; and his gravestone at a veterans memorial cemetery in Honolulu (which is available on-line; thanks to Olde House Rules for the suggestion to add this)

I started making a J. Eric Holmes photo gallery on my Sites page. Only three photos up now, more to come. Thanks to Tony Rowe for two of the scans.

Holmes (right) from 1979. He was devastatingly cool and even had a bit of swagger, something not normally associated with gamers of the time. But then, he walked the world of geekdom and the realm of medicine and neuroscience. A fascinating character...

Hi everyone, I'm doing a series of video posts at my Adept Play site called "Finding D&D." So far I've put up three out of five.

Holmes plays a role in my basic claim, as I see it and the line which follows as being less of an Icon Of Gaming and more of an actual played-game with enjoyable play-properties. Therefore it serves as the only practical linchpin for my first video, as a sort of house-heretic for the second, and unsurprisingly as the most fruitful or valuable source-material for the third.

Anyway, the series starts with The Standalone Complex, which I've linked here, and goes on to Communion and The Fundamentals which you can find in the same section of my site. I'll be doing the last two over the next couple weeks.

Oh yeah - these are just drafts, actually - not all that slick in production, plenty of minor fumbles in presentation and in the occasional factual error. Feedback is appreciated but please help me fix stuff rather than reviewing as if they were a final product.

B4 Campaign Sourcebook

At last - I'm ready to circulate the 48-page "B4 campaign sourcebook", a collection of mostly new material celebrating Tom Moldvay's "The Lost City" including:

Retrospective: The Lost City
Memories of Tom Moldvay
About the Artist, from “The Art of Jim Holloway”
Printing History, with notes from the Acaeum
Origins of the Lost City
Worship of the Ancient Gods
The Cynidicean Mosaics
Holmes and the Lost City
Notes on the Underground City
Expanding the Adventure
New Monsters
The Emirates of Ylaruam
The DM’s Guide to Cynidicea
Review: “Mystara: Return to the Lost City”
Review: “Masque of Dreams” (including some previously unpublished artwork by Michael Kaluta!)
Review: “Elder Evils”
2013 Gen Con Championship

There was also a 24-page section detailing the Underground City which I will be releasing as a separate pdf, as I'm working on significantly improving my original, 30+ year old notes.

Module B4 was published for use with B/X, but lends itself magnificently to a Holmes Basic campaign (there are even instructions in the module for running it entirely using the Blue Book - see Zach's article for more info).

So there are three different Zenopus games scheduled for #ntrpgcon now!

So there are three different Zenopus games scheduled for #ntrpgcon now!

As announced previously, Steven Muchow is running his "Ruined Tower of Zenopus - 40 years later" on Friday evening, using the Black Hack system:
https://tabletop.events/conventions/ntrpgcon-2018/schedule/393

Bill Barsh of Pacesetter games is running three sessions of a "What Depths Zenopus" tournament for AD&D 1E, on Wed evening, Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. It sounds like this is a fleshed out version of the original dungeon. https://tabletop.events/conventions/ntrpgcon-2018/schedule/375
(Wed listing, click on game title to find other listings)

Since all of the above are Wed-Fri, and the con is short on games for Sat, I submitted my "Return to the Tower of Zenopus" Holmes+OD&D scenario for Saturday afternoon, and it's now listed:
https://tabletop.events/conventions/ntrpgcon-2018/schedule/393
#brazenheadofzenopus

Plus we have Carl Heyl (member here) running a "Discos and Dragons: Holmes Basic using 70s resources" session on Friday afternoon:

A good showing for the 40th anniversary year of Holmes Basic!

Judges Guild module #80 review

Andy C wrote:

Ran across this review of the Judges Guild module "Of Skulls and Scrap***** Green" on Dragonsfoot; the adventure was originally run at Gen Con X.

Reading the review, it sounds like this would be a pretty good one to add to the arsenal of Holmes-friendly modules - even has a wilderness adventure you could probably use as a Holmesian sandbox : )

Gen Con X souvenir program

I got a chance to flip through a copy of the Gen Con X souvenir program at Gary Con, which was part of a display for The Collector's Trove in the Legends of Wargaming room.

The Holmes Basic Set is advertised on page 19, obtainable at booth #s 26, 27, and 28. There's also a map of Lake Geneva which I think might have been drawn by DCSIII (there's one of his little dragons in the lake!)
