If any Holmes fans are going to be at PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia in a couple of months (11/30-12/2), I'm going to be running a Holmes Basic session using B1 In Search of the Unknown as envisioned by Dyson Logos in his "ReQuasqueton" map (reduced down to about 16 rooms). It's part of a larger old-school gaming effort at the convention. I'll share scheduling info as I have it.

A bit of a fun thought experiment.

A bit of a fun thought experiment.

It's 1978. You find a Holmes basic set that has one additional RPG book in it, and that's what you have to develop a campaign from. It can be any book from 1978 or earlier - but only one. What would you pick, and how would you use it?

Not sure if anybody's taken a look but the download of B1 In Search of the Unknown now includes the Holmes version of the module. Unfortunately the scan isn't great, and the pages look washed out a bit, but if you've been looking for a Holmes B1 this has it. (B2 Keep on the Borderlands also received an update but it's two different PDFs of the Moldvay version.)

Hey Holmesians!

Hey Holmesians! I'm curious to find out what you guys do with Strength. Do you use any Strength modifiers to hit, to damage, for encumbrance, or for opening doors? Do you do ability checks based on it? Or do you play by the book and just have Strength as the prime requisite of Fighting-men?

In the latter case, what does the Strength spell do in your games?

I got a 1st edition (3rd printing) blue book from eBay in the mail today, complete with lizardman logo.

I got a 1st edition (3rd printing) blue book from eBay in the mail today, complete with lizardman logo. It's a shame that the delightful rule about zombies being poisoned by salt was removed from the game. Not to mention a couple of cool pieces of art.

I did a side-by-side analysis of Holmes and Moldvay.

I did a side-by-side analysis of Holmes and Moldvay. Holmes should be every magic-user's preferred version of classic D&D.

I wrote about using Holmes with the Cook/Marsh Expert book.

I wrote about using Holmes with the Cook/Marsh Expert book. I'd love the thoughts of Holmes fans here on the ideas here, or their own concepts of how to combine the two.
