Interesting post. When all weapons did 1d6 and monster hit dice were 1d6, fighters' combat ability was much closer to that of the other classes; really the only things fighters had going for them were magic swords and slightly better to hit rolls (clerics could wear the same armor, so no major advantage there). When variable weapon damage was introduced, variable class HD and d8 hit dice for monsters all came in together; with the other classes using smaller HD, I think it definitely gave the fighter a little more edge. Given that fighters of all the classes have no special ability (ie. no spells, no thieves' skills or backstab) I think it made sense to give fighters more of a combat edge. Excellent analysis..
