In case anyone wondered, I did not die. Here is an interim post while I work on more 3D.

I've been thinking about tavern prices, and this got me thinking aboutthe value of money.

I've been thinking about tavern prices, and this got me thinking about the value of money. In RL, a gold piece was what the Romans paid soldiers for a year of service. Yet in B1, a mug of honey mead is listed at 1gp. A whole year's pay? (There's also something called Roast Joint for 2 gp, but I don't allow characters to smoke weed in my campaign...ha ha). Clearly there's a different currency valuing system at play. So how much does a gold piece buy in your campaign? What do you base your prices on?

A few days ago on Tumblr the login page image was this illustration of some warrior and his friends exploring a place of large mushrooms - Mike Carr's B1 In Search of the Unknown. Strange and interesting at the same time.

I will not be hijacking this forum, so in the future any who are interested in what I am up to should probably stop by the blog. I will continue to post Holmes Basic related items here.

This post is an example of how we can look at the details of a place like Portown and craft adventures from them.

I'm new here, but I wanted to share that I have a 3D model of Portown based on R.C. Pinnell's map, which was itself based on Paleologos work. I made the model in Sketchup, and you'll need to install that program (it's FREE) in order to get the file. You'll also need Google, Drive, for those who do not. There are other models there, too, including the Green Dragon Inn.

A new blog with a 3D rendering of Portown.
A new blog with a 3D rendering of Portown. This is based on the version by RC Pinnell (Thorkhammer), which in turn is based on the version by Paleologos on DF (see the "Portown by Palelogos" link above). The blog author also has a DF thread with more details:

Portown in 3D
Edited] In the 1970's, a man name J. Eric Holmes wrote the Basic version of Dungeons and Dragons. This was the now familiar "blue book" of rules that so many of us began with. His "Portown" sample dungeon became an iconic encounter that inspired many.
