I'm new here, but I wanted to share that I have a 3D model of Portown based on R.C. Pinnell's map, which was itself based on Paleologos work. I made the model in Sketchup, and you'll need to install that program (it's FREE) in order to get the file. You'll also need Google, Drive, for those who do not. There are other models there, too, including the Green Dragon Inn.

  1. Great rendering & welcome! Paleologos' Portown map is the "go-to" map for Portown these days, but I've been working on my own version of it and the Green Dragon Inn for a few years now, although I've not let anyone else see it. Its huge, and far from complete! I'd love to have a 3D version of it, but it'll be a challenge with the cliff face and the "arch" that opens to the docks & the sea itself. I've ideas for art, but I just can't seem to draw a 3D version of my town; I even tried to build a physical 3D model of the landscape with cardboard! (I would've finished it if I hadn't accidentilly ruined it when I moved...)

  2. Thank you! Sketchup is touted as a user friendly 3D rendering program and UI, but it can be tricky to use. The model I posted went through many different versions. I'm also not an expert -- were I to do it again, I'd do the whole thing differently. It was definitely a "learn (& make lots of mistakes) as you go process. The point of my rambling is that there are 3D rendering programs available to help you, but they can be difficult to use and, well, let's say "temperamental." I chose Sketchup because it has a free version. I also love the tools, which allow me to rotate, orbit and pan. Pro versions go for 100's to 1000's of dollars. There's also a very impressive Tomb of Horrors model on the Sketchup 3D warehouse site. I'm taking a break from Portown, as it feels as if I spent my whole summer and part of the fall there,  but I'll likely be tweaking the models for years to come.

  3. I'm definitely self-labeled as "terrible" when it comes to anything in the realm of computer art aside from MSPaint. ;) I'd prefer to hand-draw a 3D picture of my work, although the re-learning curve for drawing 3D buildings & such is also quite steep. I used to do a lot of free-hand draw buildings, people & animals all the time in high school, and even toyed with the idea of becoming a technical draftsman, although that never happened. :P

  4. Julian Levallon I've seen Sketchup and it can definitely do some amazing things; I think there may be a model of the Keep on the Borderlands available for it as well (seem to remember running across one a while back).

Don't have time to install it to view your model - any chance you have a screen shot you could post?

  5. The link above takes you a blog post that has six or seven jpgs exported from the model. There's some noise in one of them, but it should give you a general idea. There is a model of the Keep at the 3D Warehouse --several in fact. There is also the Tombs of Horrors and a few other things if I remember correctly.
