In some ways there is a complete lack of sophistication -- who is in the guardrooms, what are they guarding, and why -- and yet there is an element of archaic realism, like opening a heretofore unknown copy of the Pkanotic Manuscripts, in which the age and source do not ask for but command the suspension of our disbelief...

ReplyDeleteI had another thought. Room E would probably be some kind of leader lair (humanoid or evil human), with the Secret Door as an escape route.
ReplyDeleteI had notebooks full of "Holmsian" dungeon maps in high school! I think I still have a lot of them, in storage in Mom's garage...
