I could see this happening in the early 80s. Holmes was in the wild until well after Moldvay was out - I got my Holmes new in early '82 and didn't know about Moldvay until the next year. I went straight to AD&D but if that wasn't available we'd probably have used Cook Expert as my friend in '83 had the B/X combo.
I also remember seeing Eldritch Wizardry in a B. Dalton in '83, and I got my OCE OD&D set in a game store in the late 80s, so OD&D was definitely still floating around in some places.
Yep. This happened to me, as rural USA as you can git in central Nebraska, and having the only game around for hundreds of miles! Jeff described my experience almost exactly; I started with Holmes, BX, AD&D, Swords & Spells, Greyhawk, Blackmoor, Eldritch Wizardry & DDG&H! (I never did find the LBBs, or read them until I bought the PDFs a few years ago!)
