The $39 font bundle deal including Futura by URW - and with a license for use in commercial products - has been extended for at least another week. I bought the bundle last week & found the URW Futura to be well done. It's not an exact match for the original (it's slightly more compact and taller) but probably close enough for most.

ReplyDeleteI just discovered a site where you can upload a sample sheet and make a font of your own handwriting... I wonder if it could be used for scans of the fonts in old game books...?
ReplyDeleteSounds intriguing. Does it then give you a license to use the generated font? As I understand it, in the U.S. the copyright resides in the software used to generate the font, not the typeface design itself.

ReplyDeleteAccording to their FAQ, if you draw it, it's yours to use as you wish (basically, they're digitizing your design for you, not creating the font).

I'd think in using a font from an old publication, you'd need to know if the rights to that font we're still held elsewhere, if you were going to use that font commercially yourself...
