Great album from 1977, and same as Holmes sort of hard to pin down and
excellent at the same time.

The Jam are inextricably linked with my early RPG days in Éire, as everyone in my group was a Mod. I was an honorary Mod, on account of having a German army parka actually from Germany (though I was already more into Bowie than anything else). Thanks for the memories! :-)
I've always loved Going Underground, it's the zenith of their "punk" tracks. I started with the cassette tape of Snap, their singles collection. The run of singles is jaw-dropping. It's hard to pick one, but if hard pressed I'd pick Town Called Malice. It's the song I'd play for non-fans to start with - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfpRm-p7qlY
This band had two songs on the "Eurotrip" soundtrack, and I just listened to this very song a few minutes ago!

ReplyDeleteLove the Jam! I've been a fan for over 20 years. I bought the Direction Reaction Creation boxed set when I was in London in 1997.
ReplyDeleteMust be The Jam, because The Jelly doesn't shake like that...?
ReplyDeleteI always thought the tiles on that cover looked like graph paper
ReplyDeleteThe singer played a gig in Seattle a week ago. I couldn't make it.
ReplyDeleteI had one early Weller solo album (on cassette!) & always meant to get more but never followed up
ReplyDeleteOk so I can't say that JEH was a fan, but both his sons were. My favorites are Modern World and Pretty Green.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite track is Going Underground, which coincidentally also inspired the 2000AD Nemesis strip.
