It does not seem so incredulous that later editions of D&D offer Wizards, Sorcerers and Warlocks (Magicians, however not so much) classes for players, yet D&D's "Vancian" magic system is constantly rejected by those same later editions and the majority of players. Unless it is couched in a spell-point system. ;)
