A copy of the super rare Domesday Book #12 (1972) is up on ebay. Page 6 is the second auction photo. Edit: This is not the issue with the "Facts about Blackmoor" by Dave Arneson, that is issue #13

Talking about gems of the hobby, this is one of the rarest items you might have in your want list:

Time to check my cushions for change...
ReplyDeleteOoof.. $2500 opening bid, definitely not for the light of coin or faint of heart!
ReplyDeleteLooks like someone was a Berni Wrightson Conan fan.
ReplyDeleteI was gonna say that, Chris! ;) ...as for any price for any D&D related on eBay: 8o
ReplyDeleteThe seller has a feedback of 1?
ReplyDeleteTony Rowe: based on their posting to the Acaeum, I thought this was juliabulia but apparently it's not: ebay.com - juliabulia | eBay
ReplyDeleteChris Holmes Robert Weber Thx guys I was sure I'd seen that pose before. It's from the cover of Conan the Barbarian #1 October 1970 en.wikipedia.org - Conan the Barbarian (comics) - Wikipedia
ReplyDeleteTony Rowe Yeah and the flatbed scans and short description don't inspire confidence the seller actually has the item. I just posted it here so everyone could see the scans.
ReplyDeleteAllan Grohe Thx I didn't realize that Acaeum thread had been updated with this. That helps some but the consensus appears to be it is overpriced due to staining and missing a page. https://www.acaeum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?cache=1&f=2&t=16184&c=1
ReplyDeleteI now realize the page 6 shown in the auction is the back of the item. Page 7 is missing.
ReplyDeletePer Jon Peterson the Facts About Blackmoor (edit: from issue #13 not issue #12 that is being auctioned here) was printed in the JG First Fantasy Campaign http://playingattheworld.blogspot.com/2012/07/heresies-of-domesday-book.html
ReplyDeleteZach H Um true. Actually DB issue #12 isn't a terribly interesting one...
ReplyDeletere: scanning, I wish someone with a collection of them would scan their copies in and make them publicly available (watermark them so scammers couldn't try to pawn them off as originals, of course). It'd be a huge service to the old school gaming community to be able to read through some of these old artifacts from the dawn of the hobby. Would also be great (thinking long term) if someone with this level of collection donated them to the Strong Museum or a university (a la the Fritz Leiber papers http://www.lib.utexas.edu/taro/uhsc/00021/hsc-00021.html) for posterity.
ReplyDeleteAndy C you have looked for the Domesday Book on like WorldCat, right? There are university library holdings.
ReplyDeleteAnd I believe the Strong has at least one set of DB #1-13 coming to them.
ReplyDeleteUrk. I was mixing up the content of #12 & #13. Will fix.
ReplyDeleteAcaeum Domesday page for reference. It has a scan of the cover of this issue, but not the "back" (page 6). Also lists the contents for each issue. acaeum.com - Domesday Book
ReplyDeleteZach H I've pointed out before that a lot of the descriptions there are a bit dated. Like I think I know of four (original) copies of #3 that survive? And that's just ones I've seen with my own two eyes. More are out there, surely, though for various reasons I think that's the rarest one.
ReplyDeleteAnother picture from this auction, posting here for posterity. Page #6 of Issue #12:
