That's a great article though it grinds my gears when articles assume that "D&D" is the only RPG in existence.
ReplyDeleteWell what about: shadow run, planescape, warhammer, warhammer 40k? To name a few
ReplyDeleteD&D is just big enough to be the brand identifier for most people. It's like how people will generally ask you for a Kleenex, not a facial tissue or a Band-Aid, instead of an adhesive strip bandage.
ReplyDeletebrb, I've got to Xerox my Kleenex
ReplyDeleteAgreed that it's obnoxious when articles (or people) assume that D&D is the only RPG, but this particular article quotes an organizer as saying that "my staff is trying to expand [kids'] horizons beyond D. & D. and into other independent games" and complaining about the parents being upset about them not playing D&D. Seems like a pretty clear acknowledgement of other games' existence to me.
ReplyDeletesure, but that’s in reference to a single occurrence. The rest of the article completely neglects it.
ReplyDeleteI like the article. For people outside the hobby you must first justify the existence of dnd before you can have other rpgs. Explaining Shadowrun to someone and having them be sympathetic to it is hard if they don't already except that dnd has value. Lord of the Rings is more popular than Neuromancer (and then justifying the fantasy elements(beyond bizarre to someone that isn't already into pretending to be an elf/barbarian)). For better or worse dnd is the xerox or kleenex of rpgs and it gives the reasonably aware person a starting point to begin to understand the nerd shit that we are all into.
ReplyDeleteI started with dnd before I knew about Call or Cthulhu etc. I am sure most everyone here did too. I think it is reasonable to only expect a casual reader to only have the mental energy/patience to wrap their head around one rpg at a time.
ALso the drawing is cool.
When people read a news article on a topic they know well, they invariably find the writer is uninformed, misinformed, making things up, or lying. Every time!
ReplyDeleteBut then that same person turns the page and reads the next article, and believes it to be true.
Next time you read... anything... remember how bad this article, about something you know well, is.
don't call it a comeback, we've been slaying for years....

Chris S ikr? D&D and Pathfinder have always been a going concern at my FLGS. We didn't play a lot of 4e, but we played 3.X, Pathfinder and now 5e. We also have a 1e game but it's guys I met there playing at people's houses.
ReplyDelete(I keep trying to start an 0e game but no luck yet.)
hey man its all cool... like they dont get us and so the articles wont get us... and we need to just keep on trucking... do your thing and people who dig will dig...
ReplyDeleteSure sure :) I wasn’t trying to bad on the article, just grumbling a tad
ReplyDeleteHello, everyone, my name is Kate, I was injured and my heart failed when a major problem occurred in my marriage seven months ago, between me and my husband. so terrible that he took the court case to get a divorce. he said that he never wanted to be with me and that he no longer loved me. Then he walked away from the house and made me and my children go through severe pain. I tried all my means possible to recover it, after much begging, but all in vain and he confirmed that he made his decision, and he never wanted to see me again. Then one night when I got back from work, I met a friend of mine who asked my husband. so I explained everything to her so she told me that the only way to recover my husband is to visit a spell caster because it really worked for her, too. so I never believed the spell, but I had no choice but to follow his advice. So she gave me the e-mail address of the spell caster she visited. dr.egunjobiabijawara@gmail.com. So the next morning I e-mailed her to the address she gave me, and the spell caster assured me that I will be back to my husband within three days. What an incredible statement! I never believed, so he talked to me and told me everything I need to do. So the next morning, so surprisingly, my husband who has not called me in the last 7 months, called me to let me know he would be back. So incredible !! So that was how he came back the same day, with much love and joy, and he apologized for his mistake, and for the pain he caused me and my children. So, from that day on, our relationship was now stronger than it was before, with the help of a spell caster. I will advise you if you have any kind of problem, please, I will advise you to contact Dr. Egunjobi Abijawara, I give you 100% guarantee that he will help you to solve your problems. Send him an email: dr.egunjobiabijawara@gmail.com
