Reading through Holmes again it suggests using dexterity for initiative order, but then I noticed none of the creatures in the monster section have that stat...what is the assumed dexterity per creature?
Metamorphosis Alpha uses Dex for initiative. It was released in 1976, so it either introduced the idea or used an alternative way to resolve initiative.
"The character with the highest dexterity strikes first. If the Dungeon Master does not know the dexterity of an attacking monster he rolls it on the spot."
(Holmes Basic Rulebook, 1977 first printing, page 20)
Chris Holmes That is possible since MA came out in 1976. But the kernel of the idea goes back to the LBBs where it says that "[Dexterity] will indicate the character's missile ability and speed with actions such as firing first, getting off a spell". That's just about the only statement related to initiative in the LBBs!
That seems logical. We also ordered our actions by magic first then misses then melee. If there were opposing magic users the one with the highest dex would go first I suppose.
If I'm not mistaken you make an executive decision. And or roll Dex on spot.
ReplyDeleteRoll 3d6. Done.
ReplyDeleteOk so nothing specifically notes in the rules I missed
ReplyDeleteThe early printings of B2 include dex stats for monsters.
ReplyDeleteThom Hall nope, I had wondered the same thing. Then I had a discussion with Michael Thomas regarding it. (BLUEHOLME creator)
ReplyDeleteThanks folks much appreciated. I will just leverage later resources and/or roll 3d6 when needed

Awesome thanks Bryan, I don't know why I missed that bit on recent skimming
ReplyDeleteLet this be your guide: zenopusarchives.blogspot.com - Typical Monster Dexterities
ReplyDeleteI guess you could technically roll 4d6 and have one of them be a different color (in the event you are tied with another figure)
ReplyDeleteThe majority of those monster Dexs from B2 are in the average range (9-12). To simplify we could just have a few categories
ReplyDeleteSuper slow = 3, Slow = 7, Average = 10, Fast = 14, Super fast = 18
ReplyDeleteIn practice, I tend to let the party thief go first every time unless the Monster is noted as being very fast
ReplyDeleteNice touch, Zach H. Mind you, I always play thieves, so I'm biased. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if I or Dad got the idea from Metamorfose Alpha.

ReplyDeleteThat order of combat - Magic/Missile/Melee - is in the original 1975 Warlock, and was also included by your father in the Basic rulebook.
