I can't remember anymore. I remember the Train store I bought it from which also stocked wargames. I remember the terrible polyhedrals in various colors which eventual chipped and crumbled and especially the d20 that developed a tendency only to land on a few numbers and the sharp-edged and pointed d4 and d8 having the tips break off. I loved that set. It was a doorway to a world of magic, wonder and infinite imagination, though I've heard that some people just chose the blue pill.
I had Keep on the Borderlands with the chits instead of dice and, very happily, got a pristine copy from Wayne's Books a few years back that sits on my shelf...
Wow, I did not know there was a version with geomorphs/monster & treasure assortment. I have two copies, one each with B1 & B2. Which printing had the geo/monster combo? Now I need to find a copy!
My Holmes set was the last version with the final edit of the rulebook (Dec 79) and B2. I got it a present late in the day, 1982, in fact after Moldvay Basic had already been released.
Mine came with B2, the chits, the coupon for the dice, and the dungeon geomorphs, but not the MTA. I don't think I got the dice (as pictured above) until I bought Moldvay Basic set. (Not part of this discussion, but I guess its a big thing to get the 3 hole punched version of Moldvay's Basic AND Cook/Marsh Expert books!) ;)
I'm abstaining for the moment as I'm not certain my vote 'matters' as my first copy of the Holmes set I ever owned was not until a buddy of mine, knowing I loved the "old D&D stuff", bought me a mint copy of the box set for Christmas of '99. It had/has B2 and the chits within the rule book.
Eric Norred I would think that matters, since it was a set.
I "lost" my original set, and what I've picked up over the years have not been sets, more pieces and parts, so I'm not counting them, just my original.
I got mine from a model rocket store that had a few wargames in the corner and the box drew me in!The 70s was a LONG time ago for this old mind to remember all the details.
Keep, and those damned chits. It took me two months of saving my allowance to afford the box, then a couple more weeks to get some dice. That was Fall 1980.
I got the book without the boxed set as Toys by Roy in Beaumont had sold out of the boxed set before Christmas (I bought it with Christmas money). They had also sold out of the dice so I bought a boxed Gamma World set for the dice (and wound up reading Gamma World first if memory serves).
Mine came w/B1 AND the 'yellow' (puce) M&T assortment - ('Jan '78). There were like 3 of them weren't there (blue, green & yellow)?
ReplyDeleted12's like golf-balls and d4's like pub-darts (yay caltrops!) :-D
ReplyDeleteB1 and the multi-colored set of dice (no crayon needed).

ReplyDeleteB1 (no color), dice (almost instantly became round), and that's really all I remember. Not that anyone should trust my memory.
ReplyDeleteI have two copies of Holmes: one with B1, one with B2.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the poll only allows me to vote for one.
Jonathan Becker Sorry about that, but cool!

ReplyDeleteI have pulled all three from my boxes past and present. Chits and dice also...

ReplyDeleteMine came with both B1 and B2, and the chits.
ReplyDeleteJonathan Becker, didn't the box promise one of two scenarios - 2B or not 2B?
ReplyDeleteHow bad is it that I don't remember?
ReplyDeleteMine came with B2, it also came with chits and a coupon for dice when they were available.
ReplyDeleteTim Shorts, don't worry, it's not too bad.
ReplyDeleteThere's plenty of games from the late-70s / early-80s that I'm sure I've forgotten completely.
Tim Shorts Jon Wilson Remember what? Forgotten what? What were we talking about?
ReplyDeleteeh, what? Where am I??

ReplyDeleteB1 ruled for awhile, but it looks like B2 is catching up!

ReplyDeleteMy other set came with a pony.
ReplyDeleteAww, I wanted a pony...!
ReplyDeleteEric Norred I would think that matters, since it was a set.

ReplyDeleteHerb Nowell
ReplyDeleteSo basically, your Holmes Basic came with Gamma World! The set of my dreams...
