Let your brains ruminate over these images, and see if something doesn't pop into existence that would be a great fit for
FANTASTIC! EXCITING! IMAGINATIVE! ...
— There are already some creative uses for hydra heads in the pile, but there could be more.
I'll leave this portion open til after New Year's Eve.

When battling harpies, heterosexual males should save versus distraction from moving mameries.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't until 3rd ed that WOTC started making harpies wear bras..
ReplyDeletePg 29: "Hail Hydra, immortal Hydra! Cut off an arm, and - wait.. No arms. Make that 'heads.' Let's start over."
ReplyDeleteNOBODY expects the kobolds 'round the corner! Their chief weapon is surprise!...and swords. Their TWO weapons are surprise and swords...and polearms. Their THREE weapons are....I'llcomeinagain.
ReplyDeleteEric Norred, interesting that you see kobolds, where I see gnolls...
ReplyDelete~ideas race around brain~
Wrong kind of big breasted birds! Hunting for a Christmas turkey ain't what it used to be!
ReplyDeleteJon Wilson They are outfitted very similarly to the gnoll illustration in the Monster Manual. Particularly the 2nd one, wielding a pole arm and shield. Which is interesting, because the publication of Holmes pre-dates the MM. Plus prints 1-3 had no Gnoll entry, despite including them on the Wandering Monster table.
ReplyDeleteSo wait -- d'you mean the illustration of them was present when there was no entry for them?
ReplyDeleteMy current copy of Holmes is the Dec '79, but I'm certain my original would've been earlier than that (oh, how I wish I still had it).
Jon Wilson Ha ha! Oops. Gnolls is, in fact, what I meant to write.
ReplyDeleteEric Norred, combined with Zach's post, I started to think that was why you thought that they were kobolds!
ReplyDeleteGnobolds.

ReplyDelete...is that anything you'd like to take up?
Or shall I get to work on that...?
Grandpa Chet
ReplyDeleteActually... I couldn't resist starting to tinker with that idea. Blending weird monsters into new weird monsters appeals to me (see also the Ogre Troll on my blog).
But I'd love to include any notions you had on the subject -- we could split the byline...
Jon Wilson Feel free. Or feel freely. If I survive the next week, I may get with you or pun something else up.
ReplyDeleteYou guys might not believe how much material I wrote for this year's Gong Farmers Almanac on the basis of people pitching (often goofy) ideas at me... I think it was something like 20 or 30 times the number of words I had written for the 2015 edition.
ReplyDeleteAnd taking something goofy and trying to turn it into something solidly game-worthy is what I do on my blog for April Fools Days.
I need to find my trusty compass and quest towards yer blog.

ReplyDeleteRight — going to "close" these pages as of now.
ReplyDeleteI'll have the final pages popping up in the next day or three, including a different approach for one of them...
