I always associate the spell Magic Mouth with Holmes Basic, because (1) it's in Holmes but didn't make it into the later Basic line, and (2) it is used/mentioned in the original versions of both Holmes modules, B1 and B2. Here Delta takes a look at the variations in Magic Mouth that have appeared in the D&D rules over the years.

  3. Yes, a real classic. It's neat because it appears to be a demi-human party (like in the Hobbit when Gandalf was gone). One detail in that picture that is often overlooked is the tiny pair of glowing eyes down the stairwell.

  4. Zach H, a classic indeed. When I read Brian's comment I immediately thought of those eyes, ...because I always think of those eyes. They're one of the little details I like most about this illustration. But more importantly, at least to my thinking, it depicts dwarves with torches. Like this, mainly because I have a natural bias against infravision. I finding the need to use an external light source makes the game grittier & more challenging.

  5. Unfortunately the eyes are invisible/not-present in the gold-cove WotC reprints of the AD&D PHB from 2013-ish: the scan was too poorly executed/printed, so that detail is gone.
