Basic Human Neurophysiology by Lindsley and Holmes

Tony Rowe wrote:

I finally got one of Dr. Holmes' lesser -known publications to us gamers - Basic Human Neurophysiology (from the University of Nottingham Medical Library to mine). As Zenopus has written before, he includes an example from a pulp Western by Edgar Rice Burroughs and goes into detail on how the character's brain processes what is happening in the scene. There is also a bit of humor in the vision chapter that reads like it was by Holmes.

OK - round 2... I've made a new version of the Original Tower of Zenopus as a LAYERED PDF - the original 40 year old version and a NEW version that I will be running at NTRPGCon 2018 in Dallas. It adds Rooms S1 and S2 and a legend for each room's occupants. Playing with Layers, you can display a totally blank map, different room key methods, two legends for different timelines and more!

On page 14 of Holmes we learn that Zombies can be poisoned with salt.

On page 14 of Holmes we learn that Zombies can be poisoned with salt. Of course that piece of information is neither reflected in the monster description nor on the equipment list. Does anyone know what the good doctor intended? I now imagine "Holmes-ian zombie hunters" carrying kegs of salt and little shovels for throwing it at their quarry... :-)

Brainstorming eras of Portown Adventuring in YBB/YBA (Years Before/After Basic). Some dates from Holmes, with some extrapolation on my part:

100 YBB: Zenopus arrives, builds tower on hill over sea cliffs. Green Dragon Inn established.
~75 YBB: Zenopus begins excavating under tower. Adventure of era: Zenopus hires PCs to clear out ancient nonhuman ruins under his tower.
50 YBB: Tower engulfed in green flame, Zenopus vanishes. Adventure of era: Investigate disappearance of Zenopus
~45 YBB: Town demolishes 'haunted' tower
~5 YBB: Thaumaturgist arrives, builds or moves into small tower near the Zenopus ruins
0 YBB/YAB: Present day. Pirates/Lord Leomund (level 10 Fighter) ruler of town. Pirates/smugglers very active on Northern Sea. Bodies in graveyard transforming into ghouls from graveyard due to cultist activities. Adventure of era: Sample Dungeon. Investigate cult activities (adapt a CoC scenario?)
5-35 YAB: Quiet years. Old dungeon entrance sealed by Lord Leomund.
40 YAB: Lady Lemunda (also L10+ fighter) now ruler. Pirate & cultists have merged/transmogrified into new Dagonite threat. Adventure of era: Deal with Dagonite threat in old dungeon. #dagonite

Bunnies & Burrows news...! Light version coming plus in the fall Kickstarter for a "2nd edition". By "2nd edition" I'm not sure if they mean a newly revised version or a reprint of the original 2nd version (which I believe was the same rules but reformatted and with a new cover by Jeff Dee)

I was looking up something in an old Dragon magazine the other day and stumbled across one of those things that really takes you back - an ad for the computer RPG "Temple of Apshai".

When I was a kid, for some reason I thought that game was just about the coolest thing around (something about the name and cover art, most likely); but I never played it, since I didn't have a computer - having a go at Zork in the school library was about as close as I've got.

Vintage computer RPGs are oddly one area of old school gaming inspiration that seems to be mostly overlooked. While later iterations in the genre were more reliant on graphics, the early ones were written by D&D players and followed the tropes pretty closely.

As it turns out, Temple of Apshai would make perfect fodder for a Holmes dungeon. There's a local village, near which is a seacoast with bluffs beneath which lie caves. In times past, cultists of Apshai arrived, but were driven from the village by the local priests of Geb the earth god. The Apshai cultists retreated south, but could go no further due to an impassable swamp. A stroke of luck revealed the entrance to a cave complex, which was found to run out to the sea. The cult of Apshai built a temple, and eventually expanded the cave complex into living quarters, fungus farms and mines - but eventually calamity struck, and after an earthquake the Temple of Apshai and the caves below were buried.

Why does all this work for Holmes? You have a village for a home base, and a buried cave complex (dungeon) that stretches out to sea caves - the perfect site to locate near Portown with its own sea caves. The manual for the game includes simple room writeups that can be easily stocked (B1 style), and a monster roster that tracks well with D&D. Pair it with the Monsters & Treasure Assortment supplement, and stocking is easy as pie.

Best of all, the Temple of Apshai was known for stocking its dungeons with giant insects - perfect for the Holmesian trope of giant animal encounters (the spider and octopus of the Zenopus Dungeon). Also of note is a giant ant creature with a centaur-like body and manipulative arms - a perfect fit for the Formian insect folk in the AD&D Monster Manual II. That aside, for D&D use I'd probably replace the giant mosquitos with stirges.

I’m tinkering with the default, hack-and-slash gameplay of Basic/Expert D&D by adding broad motivations for randomly encountered creatures; I’m hoping to infuse the game with fewer situations “solved” with combat and more opportunities for story and character depth to develop by encouraging more creative solutions to encounters.

This adventure idea would fit right into a Portown campaign.

Continued our family holmes edition game last night and I'm really pleased with how smoothly things run with the group. I'm basically using the Outdoor survival movement and water/food rules above ground and I think when it comes to segments where the group doesn't want to spend a lot of time exploring a hex, I will just use a random event/encounter table I'm cooking up. Thanks to the group for all the advice and links over the past few months, especially.
