At the time Holmes prepared the manuscript all of the D&D books used hobbit. So naturally he used it throughout and this is how it appeared in the 1st printing in mid-77. In the fall of '77 TSR began removing the Tolkien references so the 2nd printing of Holmes in Jan '78 uses a mix of hobbits/halflings. By the 2nd edition in Nov '78 only one reference to hobbits remained. The Greyhawk Supplement was never corrected, though.
