In Open Adventure there is an unlimited level rule that increases the amount of XP needed, by a percentage of the last, with each level. For example it normally takes about five game sessions to go up one level. But to go from fifth to sixth takes six game sessions, then seven game sessions, then eight and so on.
i'm guessing you played low magic campaigns right? that wouldn't be so bad in most i played... damn mirrors, so want the xp, soooo not worth the trouble trying to bring back to town X-P
