Ad from Dragon #80 for "Map Master" by Judge Software.

Ad from Dragon #80 for "Map Master" by Judge Software. Stormcrow posted this on ODD74. I instantly remembered the ''hypnosnake' cartoon. (artist unknown). Turns out the ad was reprinted in Dragon #81 - the first issue I ever owned.

  1. Funny you mention it being in your first issue of Dragon - the first issue I bought was Dragon 63.. still remember it after all these years!

  2. Just fixed a typo. #81 was my first issue, the one with the Ruins of Andril module. It blew my mind that they had these awesome detachable modules in the middle of the magazines. (The ad ran in both 80 and 81.)

  3. Also, I just remembered that I accidentally left #81 outside in the rain, destroying it. But I had detached the Ruins of Andril module and it was safe inside. And I still have it.

  4. "...equivalent to triple strength sleep spell.". Great stuff. Love the illustration as well. I would have loved to play with this circa 1985 I think.

  5. There was another advert in old Dragons that had a similar cartoon graphic.  Something about a DM organizing system...monster organizer.  Cant remember exactly the product, just remember the illustration was very close to this one, although it was a dragon and not a snake IIRC.

  6. #91 was my first. But I bought it at a large used book store one town away that always had a lot of old Dragons, so it was three years old at the time. My first brand new issue was that same month or later: #124 (Aug. '87, I had started playing in the Fall of '86).

I was lucky to have that used book store to grab much older Dragons for something like a buck or less and also lucky that the Bookland in my own town kept older (though more recent) issues on the shelf with the other rpg stuff. So I was able to grab issues in the 100's and 110s there while the 120s-130s were coming out.

  7. I remember hunting around for old Dragons at used bookstores. It was rare & always kind of magical when I found a copy.

  8. We've used jenga blocks a few times recently for quick dungeon walls. They are a handy size.

  9. They really are! And since you generally use blocks at the back to create new walls at the front, there's a natural fog of war effect that you don't get from whiteboards and markers.
