Saw this on the OD&D Discussion Forums: Wizards are reprinting OD&D.
$150 for the set, includes the three original books plus supplements I-IV. New covers but interior artwork unchanged.

Ouch 150 dollars...
ReplyDeleteNeat!
ReplyDelete$150 seems...pricey.
ReplyDeleteOnce again Swords & Spells gets no love. I am also surprised Chainmail isn't included.
ReplyDeleteAccording to analysis by Geoffrey on K&KA, the 1977 price for the seven booklets would be ~$42, which is ~$160 adjusting for inflation.
ReplyDeleteSOLD! I'll pay it and be happy to have it.
ReplyDelete150 bucks? That sounds about right to me to be honest.
ReplyDeleteIT HAS COME TO PASS
ReplyDeleteI'm sort of surprised we haven't seen announcement of a Rules Cyclopedia reprint first before this would have come up.
ReplyDeleteNote the "eighth" booklet shown in the picture is probably the set of reference sheets from the original set.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Zach. It looks like it doesn't have a cover illo, strengthening the case it is the reference sheets.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I would have been sold at $100, but $150 means I'd have to be in a good mood.
ReplyDeleteI cant believe they censored the cover of Eldritch Wizardry! Seriously, the whitebox is going for around $300+ on FleaBay, this is a good deal!
ReplyDeleteI paid more for just the 3 LBBs from noble knight games
ReplyDeleteThose look pretty wicked.
ReplyDeleteI agree the price is reasonable for what it is. It's not quite what I was hoping for - original covers, cardboard box, Chainmail, Swords & Spells and less funky dice would have been my ideal. I've heard (but I don't know) that the cover art had to be re-done for copyright reasons, but I would still have preferred the original colour scheme.
ReplyDeleteStill, I would go for this if it weren't for the enormous wooden box - aside from storage, the shipping would probably double the price for me. Hopefully they'll follow this up with PDFs (individual booklets would be nice).
It wouldn't surprise me if the cover illustrations were changed so that people can't pass them off as originals on eBay.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure whether I'm tempted or not! $150 is steep, and I already have the LBB. I might rather try to get the original supplements instead and wait for the PDFs to hit dndclassics. Still, though… okay, yeah. I'm tempted.
ReplyDeleteWhat printing is this a reprint of? That would be nice to know. Many OD&D geeks care about this sort of thing. But I don't think WOTC respects their audience enough to tell us. This company ruined the game--just ruined it. And now they want to make a bit of extra profit by repackaging something they had nothing to do with. Most OSR people have PDF's of this (obtained legally or otherwise) or spent a lot of money buying the physical originals on eBay. Now they want us to transfer another $150 to them. I think it's obnoxious.
ReplyDeleteNot that I feel strongly about this or anything. :)
An interesting set, and I'll almost certainly be getting one. One thing that would really be cool though would be an inexpensive set of facsimiles of the LBBs, along with a booklet of essays showing how easy it is to play and expand upon as you see fit.
