Please share your fascination with the Holmes Basic Set today, on the anniversary of J. Eric Holmes birth. I've bumped the blog post from last year. Please feel free to comment there or here.

I'm a relative newcomer to Holmes, having been raised on Moldvay, Cook and Marsh B/X. I only discovered Holmes late in 2012, and it wasn't love at first sight - initially I couldn't make heads or tails of it. However, with a little help from the Zenopus Archives and the Holmes forum on the OD&D Discussion Boards I soon grew to appreciate the quirky-verging-on-weird nature of Holmes D&D. Hopefully one day I'll be able to say "and the rest is history" ...
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Dr. Holmes!
Holmes is probably as impossible to clone as OD&D is. From the imported intro to all the quirky ( and yes occasionally murky or broken like the dagger/two handed weapon rule) sections, it drips with the distinct and evocative writer's voice of the doctor. That original whiff of gonzo tone was D&D for me (at least my first live).
ReplyDeleteFirst love, damn phone.
ReplyDeleteI ran a game using Holmes last night, and I found it mostly enjoyable. I need to learn the layout of the rulebook better as the location of many of the charts and rules gave me some trouble, but overall I find it to be a great basis for building my own D&D off of. It's also a lot easier to tell players on a G+ hangout to use the blue book than asking them to hunt down the OD&D booklets.
ReplyDeleteHehehe, I know a version of the blue book that is much more
ReplyDeleteorganised ... ;-)
BTW, I'll try to get geared up for the next session!

ReplyDeleteI'm wearing my Holmes Basic T-shirt today. Still available and I just noticed they lowered the price from $25 to $20. Good quality.
