Hello Holmes enthusiasts. I'm a gamer who started with Holmes D&D, Traveller, Starfleet Battles and AH board games in the late 70s.
I've always been fond of Dr. Holmes concise friendly version of D&D. He was also a big Edgar Rice Burroughs fan. I sometimes wonder what a Barsoom RPG written by JEH would have been like.
Fast, loose and furious, I would imagine!
ReplyDeleteWelcome, Jack! Holmes actually ran a "D&D on Barsoom" tournament for two years at GenCon in 1978 and 1979. Unfortunately, I don't have any other details on this. He wrote up some Pellucidar monsters for OD&D in an Alarums & Excursions article, so I'd guess he did the same for Barsoom for the tournaments, or possibly adapted them from TSR's Warriors of Mars game.
ReplyDeleteI was not aware of an actual Barsoom event at GenCon but I'm not surprised to hear of it. ERB was obviously a favorite during the early years of TSR.
ReplyDeleteWelcome, Jack.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the deal with Alarums & Excursions, anyway? Is it available somewhere?
