  1. Any chance you can share the rest of that article, Zach H? That last line is a great teaser - "What do you do if a player opts to become a Golden Dragon? Agree, of course." That is right in line with Holmes' orientation in Basic, but of course runs counter to Gygax's later direction with AD&D and sticking to canon / RAW human and demihuman races. Would love to read what followed those two sentences in the screen grab..

  3. Interesting article, and good lord what a long zine (course I remember A&E and TWH having some pretty large issues). I poked around the zine archive, what a lot of zines...

  4. In Men & Magic p8, the list of classes and races ends with the clear note: "Other Character Types: There is no reason that players cannot be allowed to play as virtually anything, provided they begin relatively weak and work up to the top, i.e., a player wishing to be a Dragon would have to begin as let us say, a "young" one and progress upwards in the usual manner, steps being predetermined by the campaign referee."

So this note fits with the original concept of D&D. I have in recent years really opened up to any class somebody brings me. I have imported oddball 5e classes, worked with players to invent house classes, play anything in the monster manuals, etc. Plus all the OSR weirdness out there. It works well, and I say that as somebody who by chance never really played any of the later editions past AD&D 1e, so I'm not naturally inclined to a ton of classes.

Side note: The excerpt from the post is page 20 in the linked PDF, for anybody who follows the link.
