  1. Check out those mini prices! For most of the 80s my mind operated on a mini economic system - "That burger is 4 minis, a cinema ticket is 12 minis" ;-)

  2. Fantastic! I don't believe I've seen that before. It's unfortunate they don't mention Holmes' name or explain anything else about what the book is.

  3. Funny that they used the cover art for Dragon magazine #1 to advertise FRPG.

  4. I like the strange organization of Chronicle’s minis. I’ve never seen an “anti-types” category. The poor beggar got lumped in with the furniture!

  5. Zach H Yes, it took a while to click. I just found myself looking at it for a while, and then I had to check the publisher (luckily I have a copy within arm's reach at all times).

  6. Tony Rowe Beggars were important, everyone used to test potions on them in the day. I like the "Flash Golem". :-)

  7. The old White Dwarfs are great stuff.. I highly recommend Best of White Dwarf Scenarios Vol. I to anyone running Holmes - The Lichway and The Halls of Tizun Thane are great low level scenarios.

  8. Tony Rowe Page 186 of the book reproduces the cover from Dragon #1, but in B&W, so it appears the White Dwarf advertisement may have lifted the image from there.

  9. You know what's funny? I just realized that White Dwarf #29 was the only early used issue of WD that I ever found as a kid (I also had one that I got new with a flexi 7" record - issue #95 in '87). I had this for years and years and never once noticed this advertisement. Of course I had not heard of Holmes book at the time so I would have had no idea what this ad was about.

  10. Andy C Agreed! Lichway is great. I have a little page for it here since it refers to "Basic D&D" --- sites.google.com - The Lichway - Zenopus Archives

  11. I wonder if this book is the same one Dad wrote. It's a different publisher.

  13. I have a copy of each printing. The main difference I've noted is the back of the dust jacket has a different picture. The UK version shows the Basic Set, the US one has a large picture of Holmes.

  14. Thanks for your quick solution to the mystery. Too bad neither edition got a cool cover.
