Who knew Avalon Hill produced computer games in the 80s?

Who knew Avalon Hill produced computer games in the 80s? Not I. Some neat box cover art, particularly for the sci-fi games. One is reminiscent of the style of Awful Green Things.

Cool blog post on old AH computer games. I have not played any of these.

  1. Beast War was meant to be like Dejarik, the holo-chess game from Star Wars. I had a few AH games back in the day but none listed here.

  2. I like Space Station Zulu's cover art the best.

  3. I've played one or two. Oy, did these suck by modern standards! With one singular exception. One thing that AH was a pioneer of that I thought was incredibly cool at the time was use the computer (very limited graphics) as a text program that kept a sort of virtual map in memory while you moved cardboard pieces around on a map from one of their games (only slightly changed). For instance CLOSE ASSAULT is just a text program, but if you have the map board from the original SQUAD LEADER and a mix of pieces, you can recreate the physical element of the game nicely. It does all the LOS checking, Zones of Control, and dice rolling for you. I thought it was a great extension to boardgames then, and still do now.

  4. Who wants to write this one up as an OSR adventure? Cover art by Jim Talbot, the same artist who painted the covers for Powers & Perils boxed sets and other games.

  5. archive.org - Close Assault Game Master (Avalon Hill 1981)

You can still play the original CLOSE ASSAULT on the Internet Archive. And many other Avalon Hill pc games.
