While Tucker's Kobolds get played up a lot, for many of us the first encounter with Kobolds was within this cave. And while they weren't the master combatants with split-move-and-fire tactics, they did leave guards hiding in the trees outside of the cave, and had a pit trap on the way in.
As I commented on Dyson's FB post, I wouldn't be surprised if Tucker's Kobolds (which were described in Dragon in the mid-80s) were inspired by these kobolds. Gary himself had the Old Guard Kobolds on the first level of Castle Greyhawk, and they are featured in Castle Zagyg. (When the Old Guard Kobolds were actually developed is unclear)
ReplyDeleteIt took me two days of seeing this to realize it was from B2. It's really surreal when most everybody older than had their first D&D experience was with B2 and not B1.
