Pic from yesterday's 1e game. The Earth Elemental mini my buddy had acquired and painted up here is stamped 'Ral Partha 1977' on the bottom which makes the mini older than the ruleset we were using, Not sure off hand whether Earth Elementals were included in Holmes Basic, or if the Monster Manual had been published yet(?)

  1. Elementals are some of the oldest critters in fantasy gaming, predating both D&D and TSR itself - they show up as monsters in the Fantasy Supplement included with the second edition of Chainmail by Gygax and Perren, published in 1972 : )

  5. If I remember correctly from the article I wrote on it, the 1E AD&D Monster Manual was sometime in 1977.

  7. Yeah, Holmes didn't include the Elementals in the Monster List in the manuscript. He did refer to conjuring water elementals in the section on Magic though! Gary/TSR added another reference to the Protection from Evil spell description, and the entry for Djinnis, which calls them air elementals. So three brief references to elementals as published, great teasers for higher level play!

  8. Oh, and MM came out about six months after Holmes in very late Dec 1977 or early Jan.
