Rise of the Dungeonmaster is out today.

Rise of the Dungeonmaster is out today. Here's a review I found with some samples of the art. I don't understand the criticism at the end about today's adventures being more open-ended; modern Adventure Paths and organized play are exactly the opposite.

  1. "Today’s Dungeons & Dragons adventures ask more of the player and less of the dungeon master." Anyone who has spent any time behind the screen knows that is completely wrong.

  2. Sounds like they're talking about FATE and not D&D5E / Pathfinder.

  4. On that note, just reading an article in an early issue of Imagine which talks a lot about the closed, comprehensive, codified nature of AD&D vs. the open-ended, incomplete D&D. Interesting how things are seen relative to their context.

  6. Chris Tamm Michael Thomas I suspect you are right that she is referring to storygames/FATE/etc, but kind of weird to ignore 5E & Pathfinder since they are so popular now and direct descendants.

  7. Rich Franks Good point. I'd never heard of that site before, I just found it by searching for reviews.

  8. Zach H it's a Gawker media site, so my default assumption is that's clickbait first, and story...meh, whatever....

  9. Trent Ugh, I hadn't read the comments. The author revealed her pre-existing bias there... 🙄

  10. Hopefully the format means it will get stocked at comic book shops, particularly the ones that are also game shops

  12. Curse of Strahd and Out of the Abyss are both open-ended and sandboxy so I don't think it is true to paint all 5e adventures as linear.

  13. I think you're right, Randy Gelling, the adventure "path" is more of a Pathfinder thing. 5E generally seems to lean towards the "sandbox-with-mini-adventures" idea.
