Any suggestions or preferences from my Holmesian friends on where to place portown on the outdoor survival map?

  1. That's tough because it's supposed to be on the sea. Perhaps on the east bank of one of the rivers? That would place the 'sea caves' on the river to the west of town proper. One spot would be where the river widens at the very top edge of the map. Another consideration is the "caravan routes from the south". This perhaps suggests a desert to the south.

  2. What if the river which runs north runs into a great sea just one or two hexes off of the depicted map. So the north of the map would always be only one or two hexes from a great shore. Port town could be at the mouth of the river on the shore of the lake.

  3. One of the side effects of having Holmes and Portown as a major influence on my D&D games, even if that D&D game is not Holmes Basic, 0e, or even 1e: Whenever I design a new campaign world, every port city reminds me of Portown, no matter how big or small it is, how modern or ancient it is, even if there isn't a wizard's ruined tower on the hill overlooking a cemetery, the bay, and the hill, or even if that port is on a riverbank or a lake instead of the cliffs overlooking the ocean. :)
