  1. There are lots of good works of art (and a few not-so-good) in the D&D line of products. That said? I've always thought of the Holmes Box Art as iconic to D&D, the definitive D&D artwork.

  2. He died in Sault ste Marie which is a remote area very near where I grew up.

  3. Loved his work on the basic set and the monster manual. Especially those dragons.

  4. Love DCS's stuff.. the DMG cover, the iconic "Paladin in Hell" piece in the PHB, and the tons of small art pieces not just in B1 but in G1-3 and D1-3, as well as the monochrome S2. Some of my favorites were his narrative illustrations - the series in B1 which follows what is clearly the same party through the events in the module; and the similar series in the DMG which follows a party through a series of dungeon level. He may not have been as skilled of an artist as some who came later and had more training, but he was a trailblazer with a ton of creativity and a distinctly realistic approach to arms and armor which is refreshing by contrast to the over-the-top, anime inspired fantasy art prevalent today.

  6. What spell do you think the wizard is casting? I've always thought of it as Ray of Enfeeblement. Any other thoughts?

  7. Magic Missile? When I was younger I always envisioned it as a zap of energy rather than a literal magical arrow.
