Idea for a Holmes campaign: 1st level characters start as residents of the domed city under Skull Mountain, the last surviving civilization of a post apocalyptic fantasy land (think Logan's Run). The Pit is actually a ventilation shaft. Dungeon levels get more difficult as they go up, with the outside wilderness being the worst.
THAT sounds fun!
ReplyDeleteThe characters could be gamma world type mutants
ReplyDeleteVery cool.
ReplyDelete!!!
ReplyDeleteI've often thought about the reverse dungeon concept. It would certainly help bind the group together. Reminds me of Starchaser - "Never dig up. Up is Hell."
ReplyDeleteI've always liked the idea of dungeon levels going up for mountains.
ReplyDeleteRequired starter reading: William Hope Hodgson's "The Night Land" : ) en.wikipedia.org - The Night Land - Wikipedia
ReplyDeleteChris Holmes good idea, I was thinking it's a bit like Metamorphosis Alpha but underground. Also the surface land could be where the tough GW creatures are.
ReplyDeleteDwight Fidler I was actually calling this Reverse Skull Dungeon in my mind!
ReplyDeleteMichael Pfaff Yes it's a nice inversion of the stereotype. I'm working on a 3 level dungeon that does this.
ReplyDeleteAndy C Thanks I really need to read that. In addition to Logan's Run I was thinking of Planet of the Apes 2, City of Ember and Patema Inverted
ReplyDeleteA brilliant recent movie, great for kids and adults
ReplyDeleteen.m.wikipedia.org - Patema Inverted - Wikipedia
I was thinking Sunset Warrior by Eric van Lustbader.
ReplyDeleteWhat about that subsurface anomalies adventure?
ReplyDeleteI often think of Holmes/MA mashed-up.
ReplyDeleteI will check out Patema and Night Land. Dad read it and told me it was not an easy read. Maybe I'm old enough now.
ReplyDeleteMichael Thomas Wow never heard of that book before. And from 1977!
ReplyDeleteThe movie The Void (Hellraiser/TheThing/Reanimator like) has imagery reminiscent of that gallery.
ReplyDeleteThere is a slightly similar idea in Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna, a revolutionary (and very hard) CRPG where you play an evil wizard imprisoned on the deepest level of a dungeon, and you have to get out with the aid of summoned monsters and your wits. The opposition is all bands of adventurers, and the whole thing gets progressively more fiendish as you get closer to the surface.
ReplyDeleteAndy, you are very convincing. I will read it soon. I have loved or liked everything I've read by Hodgson since dad read me Boats of the Glen Carrig.
ReplyDeleteThereb was an60's/70's horror movie that stole some of the ideas from Boats.
ReplyDeleteBotGC has some truly frightening parts to that story.
Yes Jason, the Hammer film Lost Continent. The first half hour is awful but when the giant cyloptic squid surfaces everything is great.
ReplyDeleteLots of interest here. I'll have to develop this idea a bit more in a blog post.
