Holmes 0th Edition aka Holmes Zero: the Holmes Manuscript. No editing by TSR to include references to AD&D.

Holmes 0th Edition aka Holmes Zero: the Holmes Manuscript. No editing by TSR to include references to AD&D.
Holmes 4th Edition: Theoretical further edit of the Holmes rulebook to make it more compatible with AD&D so that it could serve as an intro to AD&D as Gygax intended.

  1. Holmes -1 edition, actual Warlock-influenced house rules Holmes played by in his own campaign

  2. In that case Mazes & Perils is pretty much Holmes 4E. I'm still compiling a sort of Holmes 0E to serve as a basic set for OD&D.

  3. I can't break out of the mindset of Holmes as an intro to OD&D, so for me Holmes 4th edition is the mirage that Holmes expansions strive to reach

  4. I finally finished (first 'finished' working draft?) the first volume of my houserules that combines Holmes & 0e "Levels Beyond Basic" at http://primereq.blogspot.com/

Holmes presented as the Basic rules to 0e is not how I viewed Holmes way back when - because the book specifically references the new AD&D rules - but 30+ years later, all the puzzle pieces are together, and Holmes definitely references 0e. Yes, he added things that he gleaned from Warlock, but its still essentially 0e.

Its the additions from non-D&D sources that makes Holmes what it is, and those liberties he took with the Basic set encouraged me to take a few liberties of my own with my houserules.

  5. Speaking of the manuscript, Zach H, and ETA on the next instalment of your comparison? It must be getting close to the end, right?

  6. I meant to finish up the rest of the Sample Dungeon in the next post, but I'm having trouble finding the time. I think I'll need to break it up by room to get it out.

  7. Its summertime here in the states. I guess its good for us to get out of the dungeon on those sunny days, just to prove we ain't really liches or vampires. Can't wait for the next installment, though!
