This makes a lot of sense to me. For a long time I've thought of the Known World as a place very much inspired by pulp fantasy rather than high fantasy. Despite the Basic rulebook offering the standard monsters, dwarves, and halflings, Moldvay's modules were full of weirdness. Lost City has psychedelic druggy degenerates, a weirdo magic user clan, and a horned demon/lovecraft thing at the bottom.
