The oldest TSR shirt that I've seen. A ringer tee with the Dragon #1 cover dragon on the front and the TSR "Lizard Logo" lizardman on the back. Has the "Come Visit My Dungeon" slogan also spotted on a sticker from the time period. Ernie Gygax do you remember selling this shirt at the Dungeon Hobby Shop?

ReplyDeleteSold for just over $20 on eBay? Man, someone should be arrested!
ReplyDeleteIs there a picture of Darlene wearing this somewhere?
ReplyDeleteNo, dang, different T-Shirt.
Yes this was a very common item at the original 723 Williams St Dungeon Hobby Shop. I really do not remember the price but I may speculate that $8 was very neat the mark.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the info, Ernie. I just found a scan I have of the April 1978 Dungeon Hobby Shop "Order Blank", which lists a "D & D Shirt, M, L, XL" for $4.95 - possibly this same shirt.
ReplyDeleteHere's the page with a complete scan of the 1978 Hobby Shop Order Blanks:

Chase Neptune You might want to feature these.
I love the blurb at the end of the order blank: "THANK YOU For Dealing With The Pit Fiends at THE DUNGEON! HOBBY SHOP".
ReplyDeleteClassic. Is that a DCS illustration on the top of the order form? I'll try to round up all this info and do a new post. I thought I had a shot of another D&D shirt from around the same time period. And thanks a million, Ernie!
ReplyDeleteYes, that's a DCS pic that first appeared in Blackmoor on page 11. The DHS used it as a logo for a time. Also note that the "DUNGEON!" in the logo lettering is straight from the 1975 version of the Dungeon! boardgame.
ReplyDeleteI think this must be your other post, 1978 Gen Con shirt:

Thank you for the detail and the memory upgrade. I so miss the old TSR/Dungeon Hobby Shop and yet, it was so wonderful to live through.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Ernie. And thank you for your work managing the Dungeon Hobby Shop, a legendary location to so many D&D players.
ReplyDeleteI started a thread on this over at the Acaeum and Scott Moberly posted a photo from Gen Con IX where Rob Kuntz is wearing this very same shirt! So this puts a date of Aug 1976 on availability. See here:

I've updated my post to include all of this new info. Thanks, everybody!

In Dragon #12, Tim Kask writes in his editorial about possible new Dragon T-shirts "in two colors plus white (similar to the TSR shirts)", the "TSR shirt" most likely one of the above, which are two color and have "TSR" on the back. Tim assumes the readers are familiar with the TSR shirts, but I didn't spot any other reference or advertisement for them in earlier issues.
ReplyDeleteTSR and GYGAX magazine are the same company and Jayson Elliot is the man in charge with Tim Kask an important element of the whole.
