Deities & Demigods trivia. When the Cthulhu & Melnibonean mythos were removed, one new piece of art by Erol Otus was added, a fantastic full-page depiction of the Egyptian judgement of the dead - which I don't think actually appears in the description of the mythos itself.
That's really awesome.
ReplyDeleteThat books is full of amazing art.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually the page before the Egyptian section (at the end of the Chinese mythos, p.43).
ReplyDeleteWow ... Shawn Sanford , as a kid (er ... up until now) I always mistook that scene as the Chinese gods judging the dead, but it's clearly Egyptian. Whoops.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! I bought the original edition when it came out and never looked through the non-Melnibonean version, never saw this piece.
ReplyDeleteDitto what Andy C said!
ReplyDeleteHarley Stroh So did I!
ReplyDeleteShawn Sanford Thanks - I no longer have the later printing & remembered the pic but not where it was located. That is clearly Anubis in the lower right though his entry in the book doesn't mention this. I assume they added this for reasons dealing with pagination when the two mythos were removed.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I snagged the image from a tumblr that wrote: "The Egyptian rite of Judgement from TSR’s “Deities and Demigods” by Erol Otus, 1980. Still the only artistic depiction of the rite I’ve seen outside of the original hieroglyphs. The Devourer of the Dead is a lot bigger in this version than in the ancient copies I’ve seen." http://sharkchunks.tumblr.com/post/42707647144
ReplyDeleteIncomparable Otus.
