Thought upon reading the first post in this thread, in which the poster mentioned B/X (correctly, IMO) being better organized than Holmes.. Has anyone taken the text of Holmes and reordered the content to match Moldvay Basic's organization? Would be interesting to compare the results.

Mazes & Perils and BLUEHOLMES are both clones of sorts that do some of this. Both available for FREE! 😎
ReplyDeleteThere was a project that compiled and reorganized the Holmes basic + OD&D and supplements into one book. The organization is not quite the same as Moldvay basic, but similar, and is vastly improved over the original Holmes release.
ReplyDeleteIt's not "official" by any means, and may be of questionable copyright status. Colloquially referred to as "The Gray Book", it probably can be found with minimal effort via an Internet search.
Thanks gents - actually have both Blueholme and the Gray Book, but both of those have additional non-Holmes material included. I'm curious if anyone's just done a straight-up reorg (cut and paste style) of Holmes Basic and reordered it per Moldvay Basic. Doesn't sound like it, so I may have to add that to the large and ever-growing project list..
ReplyDeleteYeah, I believe all Holmes reorganisations went well beyond the Blue Book itself. You should visit the OD&D Discussion Forums.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Moldvay set the gold standard for the RPG format.
Actually my pet project is a reorganisation of the Holmes Manuscript based on Zach H's blog posts.
ReplyDeleteMichael Thomas Now that would be mighty good too!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought of this idea, Andy, although I am working on my own expansion of Holmes & 0e, I'm not paying attention to the organization at the moment, but I was going to loosely follow the Holmes/0e format.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see all of Zach's MS posts published as a PDF once he is finished with the series.
I believe Zach mentioned that he will do just that when he finishes the series - which shouldn't be too long now! Right, Zach H? ;-)
