Idle thought on adding subclasses to whitebox OD&D or Holmes, but without adding any new rules.
Paladin = Fighter/Cleric
Ranger = Fighter/Thief
Monk = Cleric/Thief
Druid = Cleric/MU
Bard = Thief/MU
Subclasses are for humans only (Fighter/MU is still just elves).
Use whatever multi-class rules you use for elves.

  1. You can find every one of those classes in official OD&D materials, or in the Strategic Review

    Paladin => Supplement I Greyhawk
    Ranger => Strategic Review #2
    Monk => Supplement II Blackmoor
    Druid => Supplement III Eldritch Wizardry
    Bard => Strategic Review #6
    (and the Illusionist in SR 4)

  2. I like the idea of using the four original classes as building blocks for the new ones.

  3. Bryan Manahan That's true, but in each case it adds an entire new XP table and lots of other new rules. I was going for a simpler alternative using only the rules present in the original booklets, plus the thief from Greyhawk.

  4. I've been thinking something remarkably similar to use with Delving Deeper. I dig that whitebox feel, but want more options.

  5. I use the subclasses from Robert Connolly's Majestic Wilderlands Supplement. He managed, with just a few tweaks on the core classes, to create a variety of unique and interesting subclasses that retain the old school feel.

  6. I really like this idea because (guess what?) it's highly applicable to B/X D&D as well. Kudos Zach H!

  7. The original Druid in the Greyhawk Supplement is a new monster rather than a new class. They are described as "combination cleric/magic-users".

  8. It's a nice concept. One issue I can see is spell casting for rangers and monks - the original idea was that rangers had spells, monks didn't. What if (off the top of my head):

    Ranger = Fighter / Thief / Cleric
    Monk = Fighter / Thief

  9. Good ideas. You could also quadruple class the Ranger since the original got Cleric & MU spells. Perhaps have them come in at higher levels.

  10. One could say that the Fighter/thief combination is already covered by the hobbit.
