Quote from Rob Conley's series.
"Like the Basic DnD Holmes Blue Book there are references to the larger rule set embodied by the 5e PHB, DMG, and MM. I am fine with that as obviously one purpose of this FREE PDF is to be a very large brochure to sell the core rulebooks."

  1. I love 5e but come on everyone, think about it.
Now that the newness, has  died off let me say this" We got Lied too! "What we got was not a basic set of rules by any stretch of Imagination, what we were given was a preplayers hand book, that is all. Nowhere did it tell you how to run a game, show you any monsters, or how to give out treasure? no, we got how to make a character, and we were told see its Basic rules. WOTC shame on you! If a person downloaded the " Basic Rules" its NOWAY they could run any type of game, without buying a lot more things. Would it hurt to make a stripped down 100 page rules set that combines the three main books and then point them to the other full books. Gawd that must suck to fail at a making a Basic set of rules.

  2. Mark Hunt I don't have an issue with it. They were upfront about the fact that it will be updated with additional material until it a full ruleset. Currently it looks like it will be complete by November with the release of the DMG.

Whether this is the best strategy for 5e. I played through the piecemeal release of AD&D starting with Holmes, then getting the PHB and MM and waited almost a year for the DMG. All the time I didn't realize that OD&D existed. It wasn't until late 79 and 80 that I really picked up steam with AD&D. Until then it was low level games of AD&D/Holmes and wargames.

I think people will and are adapting to the trickle of releases. If by December there is a ton of errata Wizards will be rightly mocked. If not then their strategy will be vindicated.

  3. Rob Conley I agree with you, I started back in 79 when a basic set of rules was just that a full set of rules. Maybe I expected a basic set to include Rules, My bad.

  4. I felt like they were really forthright with what this version of the Basic pdf was going to include. It was supposed to be for players and included the rules players need to play, while the Starter Set (which you actually had to pay for) would include the rules needed to run a game.
