  1. Hm.. surprised he didn't look at contemporary Judges Guild modules for some higher level Holmes play. Don't have my copy handy to look at how monsters used compare to the list of available critters in Holmes, but the original version of Caverns of Thracia seems like it'd be a good fit for Holmes (lost city,  beastmen, etc.).

  2. Holmes might have been influenced by JG's Ready Ref Sheets. Thanks to a friend, I am now enlightened as to just how useful and relevant the Ready Ref sheets are.

  3. The JG Ready Ref sheets are one of those treasures of early gaming that I was completely unaware of until a couple of years ago - love them! I'd go so far as to say that they are an essential part of any OD&D or Holmes DM's toolkit.

  4. (I have a pretty bad OCR'd copy of the RRS. One of these days, I'm going to take a lot of time to do them up properly & print them out. Either that, or eventually spring for a real copy from a legal internet vendor...) ;)

  6. I remember learning to play D&D from the AD&D Monster Manua, Player's Handbook, and the Ready Ref Sheets. We needed Basic to figure how how it all fit togeather. Good times.
