Perhaps the final fate of Portown will be to be claimed by the sea, like the once prosperous English Port of Old Dunwich. See this review of an old book, Dim Corridors, about the town: http://wormwoodiana.blogspot.com/2017/12/a-map-of-old-dunwich-and-memory-of.html

ReplyDeleteVery interesting, I guess there was a lot more to that name than Lovecraft's fictional town. Makes me wonder about Innsmouth.
ReplyDeleteFascinating stories to dig into with the nonfictional Dunwich! Thanks also for putting a spotlight on that blog - I hadn't read it before. The authors of Wormwoodiana have very cool interests.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. One of the authors of Wormwoodiana is Douglas A. Anderson, who wrote the Annotated Hobbit back in the '80s. en.wikipedia.org - The Annotated Hobbit - Wikipedia
ReplyDeleteAnother book by Anderson that I own is "Tales Before Tolkien", which collects short stories by fantasy authors who wrote before Tolkien. Some big names (Dunsany, Haggard, Baum), some weird fiction authors (Merritt, Machen), some more obscure. Great stuff.

Those do sound awesome- I'm bookmarking and wishlisting- Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThe pirates' cave under the ruins of Zenopus's tower is a clear indication that Portown is being undermined by the sea. It's only a matter of time.
ReplyDeleteI want to visit Dunwich someday before I die. It is very close to Knoddishall, a little village inland. Knoddishall is unremarkable in any way, aside from personal family history. I have read relative's research into geneology, and Sir William Jenney (knight) (1425-1483AD) - one of my direct ancestors was born and lived there his entire life.
