Jon Peterson with another 1970s newspaper article about D&D, this time a very flavorful 1976 article that ran in the Washington Post.

Read this 1976 article about "the Duke and the Evil Balrog" showing how some early adopters still played Dungeons & Dragons like it was a wargame: with players providing the opposition and the dungeon master acting as a neutral referee.

  1. In the photo, I recognize the wizard mini with upraised arms - it's the same Holmes used as Alkarzotz the Sorcerer on page 170 of his 1981 book. It's an early Ral Partha figure, 01-001 Evil Wizard Casting Spell. See here: zenopusarchives.blogspot.com - The "D&D For Beginners" Dungeon Model

  2. Here's an April 1976 ad for the opening of the shopping center housing The Grenadier, that includes the shop in the list of shops and shows a mini/cannons as part of the montage. Found this here: https://issuu.com/davidadler/docs/april_1976_washington_dossier
