If you missed it, there's now a free 389-page pdf of the 5E rules. It's a SRD for use with the OGL. It includes basically everything you need to run a game: class info, spells, magic items, monsters. All of the classes are on separate sheets, which is nice because you could just print out the info for the class you are playing and keep it with your character sheet (or use it as your sheet).

I did not expect to see OGL 1.0 attached to it.
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit odd, certainly. And it's a PDF, not RTF. Still, this will make Adventures in Blueholme much less work. ;-)
ReplyDeleteIt's still 5e...not sure what the fuss is all about. I'd much rather see a sanctioned SRD of Holmes or ODD.
ReplyDeleteHolmes is its own SRD.
ReplyDeleteI think it's mainly to make life easier for the Dungeon Masters Guild thing. Other than providing an easily usable reference (not as easy as RTF, mind), it still doesn't let 3PPs create "Compatible with Dungeons & Dragons" products because there's no D&D logo licence.
ReplyDeleteBut it does have more rules and less fluff than the Basic D&D PDFs, so that's handy for people who want to play 5E without buying the books (which might disintegrate!). It's also handy for me because I'm working on 5E conversion material to draw unsuspecting youngsters into BLUEHOLME™ ... ;-)
Lulu is going to be busy printing copies for people.
ReplyDeleteIt only contains one background.
ReplyDeleteGood move for WOTC generally speaking, but personally I have absolutely zero interest in it (or 5e itself). Between my old stuff and the amazing products that have come out of the OSR in the last ten years, all of my gaming needs are met.
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be a LOT of class info missing besides (all but one) background from the PHB in this PDF. Makes me wonder what else they cut from other sections, but I suppose WOTC didn't want ALL of 5e available for free, and make potential players pay for the extra goodies and the art. :(
ReplyDeleteI think there is one feat. Robert Weber
ReplyDeleteShane Ward
ReplyDeleteGaah! I didn't look that far ahead. That really makes me sad; (good thing I already bought all 3 books...)
Sorry about the spoiler Robert Weber a friend noticed right away. He's a bit of a feat fan.
ReplyDeleteThe absence of feats and backgrounds is a good thing in my book. Still not interested though.
