I've thought of it many times, especially in the last 7 or 8 years... My version also folds in Gamma World.
I've tried to get the original guys I gamed with back in the late 70s that I'm still in touch with interested to start such a game over Hangouts or Roll20 or whatever, but (as they say) no dice....
So.... that's "1978 California D&D"? Holmes, Monster Manual, Arduin, Warlock & the Ready Ref Sheets? I nearly run that already, except for Arduin & Warlock (don't have). What would "1980/1 Nebraska D&D" look like? Holmes, B/X, Traveller, & the Monster Manual?
I was in CA at that time. Our games incorporated pretty much whatever we could get our hands on... as I imagine was more or less the case for everyone else gaming at that time. There were even Runequest influences that showed up in our games — and a dozen or more things that I simply don't remember after the ebb of time.
Would be a blast, and fascinating from a rules perspective. I suspect it might feel a bit like the old Arcanum 1e rules we played with back in high school (we actually ditched AD&D 1e for Arcanum, after briefly dabbling with Runequest, and never looked back). Still working on getting a copy of the Complete Warlock - did the Manual of Aurania bubble up from the West Coast scene as well?
Jon Wilson, pretty funny about drawing in stuff from Runequest - if memory serves, the germ of Runequest was the Perrin Conventions house rules for OD&D so in that case the circle of life was complete : )
Andy C, I've heard that the Perrin Conventions were in All The World's Monsters II. I have physical coverless copies of Vol. I & Vol II.
Flipping through to try to find these "Perrin Conventions" of which I am previously unaware, I discovered that my copies are apparently jumbled up, e.g., I saw "Strange Little Man" in the index of one, but actually found the listing in the other...
I have lots of research and reconstruction to do, apparently.....
No. No you aren't...

Nope - been itching to run an Arduin/OD&D campaign!

ReplyDeleteYear & Region D&D -- It's a whole new OSR niche market!

Oh, and the thought occurs to me that I don't think I ever saw Warlock around... It may have been a southern California thing, mostly(?).
ReplyDeleteCA is a big state; we might need to differentiate between not just state's versions, but regions within states of vintage D&D play... ; )
Deal me in.
