  1. Great article, thanks for posting! Lew Pulsipher's one of the sadly lesser known giants of the AD&D era - his current excellent writings on game theory aside, reading through his old articles in White Dwarf are well worth the effort.

  2. Good article. The first response asks if one can imagine a successful computer or PnP RPG that eliminates level increases, stat increases and the constant hunt for better magic items. I thought that Traveller might be pretty close to that. While it does have some advancement, it's slow enough as to be almost negligible.

    Though, a Holmes only campaign might come close...

  3. Haven't read it yet, but my belief is that we're basically pack animals, and even the most stereotypically socially awkward D&D player is still more comfortable in a face to face social situation, than staring at a display.

    Now I'll go read it and see if he came to the same conclusion.
