Wow, major nostalgia hit. I think you're on the mark with the date of Holmes 3rd ed being early to mid-1980. A friend of mine got Holmes in 1980 as a gift and introduced myself and our other friends to D&D with it; I bought my own Holmes (chits + B2) later that year. On a related side note, I still have my 1981 Gateway to Adventure Catalog : )
You could be right, Andy. IDR which Christmas I received the Holmes boxed set with the B2 module. It was either Christmas '79 or '80. I had long assumed that I got it in '79 and I started playing in 1980. Regarding the discussion at the Acaeum, I guess I actually got it Christmas '80 and started playing in 81!
I just updated the Gateway to Adventure catalog section of this post. I realized there are at least 3 versions of the brown covered version. TSR seems to have updated these catalogs fairly often as new products were available.

ReplyDeleteI still have two of those catalogues too! I have at least one intact brown one, and the other with the tail sticking out under the door.
