Pretty amusing that gnolls weren't listed in the monsters section, never knew that since my original Holmes book was (I think, don't have it handy) the 3rd edition. I wonder if that Tom Wham illustration of Gnolls was present in 1st-2nd edition Holmes - in that case, there'd have been both a wandering monster entry and a pic of a critter not in the monster listings.
Good point! Yes, the Tom Wham gnoll illlustration is in the first edition - at the top of page 26, despite their being no gnoll entry. I went back and checked and gnolls are also mentioned in the Holmes manuscript in two other places: the languages that elves speak and the humanoids subject to Charm Person.
