Sounds like 5th edition will have a Basic level of play, called Apprentice tier (levels 1-4). The cutoff is 5th level when MU acquire 3rd levels (same as in OD&D). The other tiers are Expert (6-10), Paragon (11-16) and Epic (17-20).

  1. Interesting article. I'd be curious why they're rolling with "Apprentice" instead of "Basic". Both as a term as given its pedigree in the game, it seems like "Basic" would be the better choice. Something about apprentice implies that you're working in someone's employ, which is not strictly true as a low-level PC; you're an independent actor, just not that powerful yet. But hey, why argue semantics - I'm glad to see that they're looking at returning to an older framework of level scaling.
