I like the idea of giving each class some new options at level 4. However I think you don't have to call it a new class, you could just let them pick from a (small) list of options. In my silly pseudo-retro-clone I actually make them choose something at level 1 already, maybe that's too early and I should move the first "special thing" up to level 4 instead. I shall ponder... :-)
I remember waiting impatiently for the AD&D books and our group writing our own expansion of the Holmes basic rules. There were some good ideas and a lot of bad ideas that we tried out, but it was extremely fun to do it ourselves.
